Figura (A study on The Dead Class by Tadeusz Kantor) is a collaboration with the Department of Mental Health of Bologna and the Theatre Company Arte e Salute Onlus, directed by Nanni Garella. The film focuses on a rehearsal session at Teatro delle Moline in Bologna in October 2013. It is an ‘unauthorized’ reenactment of the controversial play that gave international fame to Polish director Tadeusz Kantor in 1975. The recording of the preparation of the show soon became an investigation into alienation, on the experience of reality, on the relationships between one’s personal consciousness of the past and the projection of the future. The film employs the methodology of observation (or documentary of observation), both in terms of style (flat fixed sequence, the absence of a plot, circularity, live audio, interruptions) as well as in terms of narrative.
